Từ nguyên (tiếng Anh): Nativisation of Chinese 感恩 (modern SV: cảm ân). First attested in the 17th century as cám ơn and the only form to exist in old dictionaries. In 1895, when the first volume of Đại Nam quấc âm tự vị was published by Imprimerie Rey, Curiol & Cie printer in Saigon, only cám ơn was attested. In 1931, Việt Nam tự điển (1931) by Hội Khai trí Tiến đức in Hanoi was the first dictionary to record the form cảm ân, which might have resulted from a learned reinterpretation of the Chinese characters according to their regular Sino-Vietnamese readings. During this period, cảm ơn was also attested elsewhere, possibly resulting from the replacement of the first syllable of cám ơn by analogy with cảm ân. In 1967, Từ điển tiếng Việt (1967) by Văn Tân, published in North Vietnam, became the first dictionary to record the form cảm ơn. In South Vietnam, however, cám ơn remained the standard form in official publications.
